Essential Tips for Selecting Stone and Tiles for Your Kitchen

Posted on

One of the main places in your home to find stone and tiles is the kitchen. Whether you’re in the process of picking out kitchen floor tiles or kitchen wall tiles (or both!), there are pitfalls in which you can fall but easily dodge with a little guidance along the way. Avoid making mistakes choosing tiles to guarantee a cohesive design.

Enter us, and the most common mistakes made when choosing stone and tiles for the kitchen so you can avoid them like the plague.

Patterned Floor Tiles

The first mistake is not the sort that’ll leave you making choices you’ll want to rip up the moment they’re laid, but it’s more of an oversight that too often results in missed tiling opportunities. When choosing tiles, avoid common mistakes to guarantee the best outcome.

One of the most popular wall tile areas in a kitchen is behind the stove – a beautifully decorated splash back is just a few tiles away. But that’s not the only expanse of wall on offer. Unlike in a bathroom where tiling every scrap of wall space works, it can look a bit OTT in a kitchen, but there is a middle ground. Avoid the mistakes of over-tiling when choosing your materials.

Picture a patch of metro tiles in say a pleasing sage green (Shoreline in Sea Kale is a lovely example) behind your hob and then imagine carrying a single strip above your work surface upstand. It’s a look we love because it’s subtle and then carries a fine line of colour throughout the room. Or if you prefer, add a few more rows of tone by tiling up to the height of your kitchen sink’s tap, like we did with the ceramic Shoreline tiles in Gull in this calming kitchen, or create a bespoke tiled area that hides an ugly extractor fan, just like Dan of Dan Lovatt Designs did here with our Bamboo tiles. Remember, avoiding mistakes in choosing tiles can enhance subtle design touches.

So you’ve got tiles you’re happy with in your hallway. You’ve got a majestic black and white chequerboard floor (courtesy perhaps of our Bermago and Zuber limestone tiles that looks the bees knees), but your kitchen flows from your hallway, and now you’re thinking you need to cook in the company of a chequerboard floor too. Right? Avoiding design mistakes when choosing tiles ensures visual harmony.

Wrong. Well, not wrong, if you do choose to continue the same tile as what’s in the adjoining room then it’ll look smart as design continuity always does, but the important thing to note is you don’t have to. Consider mistakes made when choosing tiles to make sure your design is flexible.

Back to that hallway chequerboard example, rather than letting it limit your design options in your kitchen. Instead, be informed by any neighboring floor tiles in the same way you would with wall color and choose a tile that’s sympathetic to it and you’ll still create a sense of flow and order. Being mindful of mistakes when choosing tiles will guarantee a cohesive design strategy.

Sticking to conversations in color, because tiles are often thought of as a material first and foremost, they aren’t always woven into your kitchen’s color palette in the way they should be. Like worktops, people often simply see them as a stone surface that’ll bed into your kitchen whatever happens. It’s crucial to avoid common mistakes choosing tiles that disrupts color continuity in your kitchen.

But tiles are one of your kitchen’s greatest areas of color, texture and even pattern (if you so choose), so to get them looking their best, they should really talk the same language as your cabinet and wall color.

As a working example, see this charcoal grey kitchen by @emmarosestyle. With crisp white walls as a blank canvas, she’s added warmth underfoot with our Marlborough parquet terracotta floor tiles whose tones are repeated in the copper worktop. Deep grey on her cabinets adds depth and then she’s woven in a third hue via her Lyme ceramic green metro tiles in Olive that feel right at home because of her many accents of potted greenery. An example of kitchen floor tiles, wall tiles and paint color working in perfect harmony. Avoiding mistakes when choosing tiles ensures harmonized integration of colors and textures.

So, you’re a sucker for stone – maybe a marble mosaic in a beautiful teardrop or love the idea of a crackle glazed tile in a rich green hue for the walls in your kitchen but you forget that some materials need a little TLC. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not taking care of their stone and tiles – whether it’s a gorgeous terracotta, or a crackle glaze tile, you need to remember to seal them and repeat the sealing drill every year, or so.

Highly Resistant Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles in Clitheroe

Tiles in Clitheroe. Most ceramic materials are highly resistant to staining and have a very high resistance to a wide range of chemicals.

Many porcelain products are practically impervious, and highly resistant to liquid impregnation and later staining. Glazed ceramic products do not stain.

Ceramics and Porcelain will not burn. The inert nature of the material determines that no toxins or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will be released during a fire.

Tiled surfaces delay the spread of fire and the surface can’t be burned or marked by a lit cigarette. This means that no smoke or gas can be emitted by a tile. Tiles in Clitheroe area with prices to suit all.

Glazed porcelain tiles are dense and incredibly tough, tilers must use a diamond edged cutter to score and cut. This means that tiles are very resistant to wear and tear, including scratching.

The vast majority of ceramic floor tile installations can be cleaned by sweeping away accumulated grit and light mopping or cleaning with a microfibre wipe.

The low porosity means that they will not stain or grab grime so they can be easily cleaned and maintained.

They can be laid in many residential and commercial applications.

Even extreme levels of ultra violet and other forms of light (sunlight) have no effect on the colourfast nature of tiles either glazed or unglazed.

The surfaces adapt to the air temperature of a room, which minimises heating and cooling costs.

Under tile heating systems can be installed during the laying process. Clay products absorb heat and naturally release it when the ambient temperature falls.

Porcelain are particularly effective heat banks as they are thermal insulators.

They will keep their colour and shape while also resisting stains, scratches and general wear and tear. This means your investment will last a very long time

The wide array of surfaces allows us to choose the perfect floor for the application.

Ceramic and Porcelain are also available in a range of slip resistant surfaces that give more grip.

Unlike other flooring materials, porcelain are electrically neutral. This means that they can’t become electrically charged when walking or touching them as a result of friction.

Other benefits include the purpose  of electric flooring for commercial and other application like operating theaters were anti static properties are required for safety.

These are a great choice when it comes to pets. Simply sweep leftover hair or mop up unwanted mishaps.

Choosing the Right Tiles for a Light and Spacious Bathroom

Style of Tiles make the bathroom feel more spacious

Style of Tiles. Depending on the size of the bathroom, black can be used at different points in the room to keep a sensation of lightness. If you have a large enough room, you can combine walls and fittings in dark colours with touches of white in the sink, on the taps and on the towels for the shower.

For example, the Architect black finish unit by Noken can be paired with the counter top basin from the same collection in white and Round Chrome taps.
Another important consideration is to have a natural light source that counterbalances the dark fittings and creates a brighter effect.

In smaller rooms, it is better to use light colours on walls and floors. Wood can create the right balance with dark fittings and give a sensation of warmth. Style of Tiles.

Black is a neutral classic, but you need to strike the right balance when furnishing the home so as not to create a dark effect. Dark furniture and fittings work in any room in the home, especially bathrooms and kitchens. Here are some suggestions for choosing the most suitable designs from East Lancs Tile Centre.

Ca’ Pietra Blackburn: Handmade Rustic Tile Collection with Screen Printed Motifs

Ca’ Pietra Blackburn. A visit to Dyrham Park revealed a perfectly preserved collection of original delft tiles in the basement dairy.

It was this discovery which inspired our screen printed tile collection, which features motifs of different National Trust landmarks, as well as flora and fauna. Dyrham Dairy is a ceramic tile collection influenced by the beautiful blue and white delft tiles that can be seen in the house at Dryham Park today. The collection, including Ca’ Pietra, shows this beautiful preservation.

Part of the basement rooms, which also include the Victorian kitchens, bakehouse and several larders, the dairy forms an integral part of this 17th century house in the village of Dryham in South Gloucestershire. Built in 1698, the dairy was originally known as the Little Kitchen and the original tiles date from the early 18th century.

With such a rich heritage behind them, our Dryham Diary collection is perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, as well as walk-in larders and pantries. Among these collections, Ca Pietra Blackburn stands out for its charm.

Ca’ Pietra. The rustic tile has a handmade style while the traditional motifs are hand painted then screen printed onto each tile for an authentic look.

A classic design that would complement Shaker-style cabinetry and in-frame timber kitchens, we have given the tile a contemporary twist for a more modern interior. A favorite, the Ca’ Pietra, blends effortlessly in both traditional and modern settings.

This is why the collection will also enhance kitchens or bathrooms with brushed brass hardware and an industrial feel for modern living. Ca’ Pietra .

The variation of blue tiles available in the ECO collection is inspired by the tones you see around you from the sky to the sea. Use blue tiles to make a splashback or a feature wall to highlight areas in your bathroom, or create a beautiful focal point in your room.
